چکیده مقاله |
The transition from high school to university in mathematics is a challenging issue for many students, however, there is a lack of research in this regard. This study aims to explore the Recourses, Orientation, and Goals (ROG) of Year 12 mathematics teachers of Mashhad and mathematics lecturers of one of the public universities in east Iran using Schoenfeld's ROG framework. The sample study comprised twenty-eight Year 12 mathematics teachers and thirty-nine mathematics lecturers that were selected using a convenient sampling method. Teachers and lecturers completed the researcher-made questionnaire comprised of four open-ended questions about their ROG in teaching mathematics. The validity of the questionnaire is confirmed by a senior lecturer of mathematics education. The findings showed that there were several significant differences between the resources, orientations, and goals of the mathematics teachers and lecturers. For instance, there were significant differences in the type of tools and resources they used in the teaching of mathematics, types of their goals in teaching and their belief in solving many problems in promoting students' learning. The study results suggest that more communications between mathematics teachers and lecturers could be happened to inform each group about the issues and context of each side of the transition to help students experience a more successful transition from high school to university in mathematics. |
